These two non-fiction sources will supplement the required class textbook and create meaningful content learning relevant to student interest. The sources in this project were selected by previous students during an end-of-year reading project following their final exam. Students will use both sources throughout the year during regular discussions and assignments, relating back to the content standards of the course. "This is the first book for school that I've actually read." I've heard that a ton of times from my students about these sources. We will use these books to delve into content discussions - ultimately leading to a permanent understanding of course concepts they will be tested on in the Spring. So much of my students' world right now is based solely digital content that they ingest in small chunks with little attention to the overarching idea. Trevor Noah's book will place them in South Africa near the end of apartheid. We will examine the Human Geography elements of his narrative and use his experience as a touchstone during content discussions. Malala Yousafzai's book will put my students in the shoes of someone who has had to leave their home or home country. They will gain the insight into what it is like to be pushed from their home, and how we can make a change in the future.
