Exiting Pathways Program students who attend the W. D. & Mary Baker Smith Career Center are preparing to take the HISET (formerly the GED test). Students in our program are 2 to 3 grade levels behind and mostly from impoverished households. They have the opportunity to earn the HISET (GED) and to obtain an industry based skills certificate in a Career and Technical area. The ethnic make-up of the school is approximately thirty-seven percent white and sixty-three percent minority. The majority of our students are on free lunch. Tardiness and lack of attendance are major problems at the school. Even though they may not have been successful in a typical high school setting, they still have the desire to learn. Reading doesn't come easily for our students. They are mostly struggling and reluctant readers.
