The bright faces of five and six year old inner city students greet each day ready to encounter the joys and challenges of learning to read, write and perform mathematical thinking. Our class of thirty learners begins each morning with a whole group lesson on rhyming, phonics and reading skills. Kindergarten students are full of energy and yet when a story is being read they are quite often spellbound. After our whole group lesson we work in small skill groups.Students learn to encourage each other to try and try again as they broaden and deepen their reading and writing skills. We also work in small groups as we practice real life math skills. With small group learning the task needs to be engaging so student behavior meets expectations. By the end of the year my kindergarten students are winning, confident readers, writers and explorers of math.
