My students have a mountain to climb. Not only are they diagnosed with autism, but they are in a self-contained classroom with very little opportunity to interact with typically-developing peer models. All seven of them have a lot of potential! But they have not had opportunities in life that many of us take for granted. The poverty on the Navajo Reservation can be very difficult to overcome on it's own, but when you have a child with special needs in your family, it can be overwhelming. These families cannot afford to contribute school supplies or get special training or interventions for their kids. School is their only resource - and with budget cuts, supporting the basic programming needs for these students is nearly impossible. In Integrated Play Groups, students with autism benefit from being in structured play groups with typically developing peers. Plus, the peer models learn a lot! These students deserve the basic gift of learning how to play...but they need to be taught!
