Building literacy skills can be challenging for students that start the year with limited background experiences, non-expansive vocabulary, and poor oral language. During our writing time it's not uncommon to hear, "I don't know what to write about!" "I can't write!" So my little ones may feel they don't know how to write, YET! This is where Lego story starters and building sets come in to play. Students will work with partners in using the Lego kits to build a story. They will use the figures for characters and create settings using the elements of the kit. They will be engaged using listening and speaking skills as they share their stories and their creations. Use of the Lego story starters, will kick start my students in the writing process in an engaged and playful way. The writers will create stories using tangible objects which in turn will help them compose, publish and read their stories.
