We have begun writing to pen pals in Saudi Arabia, Japan, and France in an effort to enhance cultural awareness in our small, rural school district. The students can access google maps on a small computer screen at school, but having these large maps to examine makes it easier for them to learn about the area and its relative location in the world. The fifth graders are also learning about the locations and features of the fifty USA states, yet less than 5% of the students have access to a map in their homes. We'd like to give them the opportunity to have a U.S.A. and a world map at home for studying purposes and to share with their families during discussions.
