My students are bright, spirited, dynamic 6th graders who attend a public turnaround school on Chicago's South Side. About 99% of our students are African-American and qualify financially for two free meals per day. Two years ago my colleagues and I came to the school with the critical mission of dramatically improving what was a failing school. Most of my students are reading 1-3 grade levels behind and are working very hard to catch up. They love books and they get positively giddy when I make additions to our library. Unfortunately, many of my books are too difficult for my students. Additionally, few reflect their culture or the world they know in a poor, crime-ridden neighborhood. Though I strive to widen their horizons, I also know the joy that comes with reading a book in whose pages one can see oneself. We all remember being an adolescent and the magic feeling of finding a book we felt as if we had written ourselves. I hope to give my students that experience as well.
