My students attend a Title I school in Indiana that serves grades 7-12. Roughly a third of our eighth grade student body has been held back at least once. The passing scores on our state exams last year hovered around 20%. Despite these obstacles, my students are brilliant! They teach me things every day that I never could have come up with on my own, and they have wisdom far beyond their years. They excel in athletics. Many are gifted dancers and singers, and we have a slew of budding artists. I know that they can learn to love reading when they see themselves in literature! By forging strong text-to-self connections, they will also excel as literary critics and writers.
