I currently teach 16 students, most from low-income families (below the poverty line) in Alabama. Over 95% of the students in the school are free/reduced lunch. We live in an area that was effected by the tornado 3 years ago. Many of them come to school bearing the burden of issues a child should never have to endure. Our building is old and the materials are dated, so as teachers, we are often funding our own materials to use with the children. My kindergarteners adore technology but have had a lack of exposure to it because I cannot afford to pay out of pocket and we do not have the funds through our school. As a teacher, the greatest rewards are the smallest ones; the first word a child reads, the first math problem he solves on his own, or the moment when you realize that one child finally got it after sleepless nights of worrying, “Will they ever understand?” Every day is an adventure!
