The majority of my students are English language learners (Spanish speaking). They are eager to learn and have expressed a great interest in anything "science", especially life sciences (which is our first unit). They attend a Title I school in a program improvement district in CA, which means that daily instruction focuses primarily on language arts and math only. It is clear to me that their past experiences/ exposures to science and social studies may have been less than ideal because of the Language Arts and Math push.
