Try to imagine a group of middle school students in Newark, New Jersey who have shed their egos, attitudes and awkwardness in exchange for a chance to perform in the theater! It's true, and it's happening right here at A.A.S. in Newark, New Jersey. It has been my experience that drama club is perhaps the most inclusive of the extra curricular activities. Everyone fits in in the theater, regardless of academic ability, size, color or sexual orientation. Only the desire to express oneself is necessary. Participation in dramatic productions is both educational and enjoyable. Drama can play a great part in promoting a child’s self esteem. By encouraging students to co-operate rather than compete, they develop collaborative skills and practices as well as a personal sense of accomplishment. Studies have shown that participating in dramatic exercises increases a child’s self esteem which is particularly crucial during adolescence, hence focusing on the middle school students. Help my amazingly talented students put on a production which would rival Broadway!
