My ninth grade, World History students are from a predominantly African-American, high crime, low income neighborhood in. Many or them have serious struggles at home and are far behind in academics. Reading is a serious challenge and they are often little interested. We are a large urban school of about 4000 high school students and I have found that Upfront Magazine has been a "godsend" in providing interesting (not too long) current events that connect to my students. The stories are almost always about teens around the world and some of the challenges they are facing. It helps them understand that the world is a bigger place than their neighborhood.
