I still remember my first book that I read all on my own - Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss. Really, I wasn't 'reading' - I had the read along version and had memorized the words. But I still remember the pride and accomplishment I felt when I showed my teacher I could "read" and track each word with my fingers. From that day on, I loved reading. I want my students to find that same passion and adventure in reading. My students spend the majority of their day learning literacy skills and good reading behaviors. While they are eager to learn, I have found that reading can be intimidating to students who don't get the practice at home. Students need to first find a love of reading for reading's sake, before they can confidently harness the skills that are necessary for reaching our rigorous literacy goals.
