The drums requested will allow all of the students in our class to participate in a drum circle using their own individual drum. Our drum circles will occur at various times of the day and provide the opportunity for students to express themselves, cooperate within our classroom community, increase their awareness of rhythms and fluency (important in reading and speaking) and provide a fun release from our academic work. It has been shown that drum circles can increase students' confidence, improve their listening skills and increase their ability to concentrate. All of these skills are necessary to become a successful student. Drum circles also help to develop different regions of the brain and cultivate an appreciation for teamwork. I think they are a perfect fit for young learners. Because of these positive outcomes, I have planned to incorporate drumming into many lesson plans. They will be used in drum circles but in academic work also. Our music teacher is ready and eager to help me with introducing their use. We will begin by simply copying rhythms and playing name recognition games as students learn how to use them respectfully, and put them away in an orderly fashion. Then we can use them to work on counting syllables in names, simple counting experiences in math and creating patterns. We could also use the drums to represent conversations between two people and work on social skills. The drums will be used with both small groups of students and the entire class. I look forward to the middle of the year when we will be able to use the drums to express ourselves freely and the students take over the responsibility of creating rhythms and working as a team to sustain our drum circle. I am eager to get started!
