My students are amazing! You would love them. My middle school is a charter school in an urban district, made up of mostly Latino and African American students. Most come from underprivileged families; more than 90% qualify for free and reduced school lunch. Some spend hours after school translating for their parents or working part-time. They are also bright, hard-working students who do us proud every year on standardized tests. Our school requires each and every student to think of themselves as college-bound ... and they do. Many will be the first members of their families to go to college. As the 8th grade Language Arts teacher, I am eager to encourage regular reading! It's easy for some students, but others need that extra push. Like all teenagers, they love reading and discussing the newest, coolest YA books, but our school, like most, has a tight budget these days.
