I teach in a public school. I have a wide array of abilities and attitudes in my classroom. I teach some classes comprised of reluctant students (intelligent kids who aren't invested in school) and some classes with ESL focus, but my classroom generally looks and feels like a typical high school classroom. High school kids in America just aren't reading very much anymore. I'm trying hard to maintain the enthusiasm they had in elementary and middle school by providing them with a variety of books instead of just the curriculum. My language arts department is now allowing 50 minutes of independent reading time in class per week to foster reading skills and habits. Like most average schools in the country, there's just not enough money to go around for projects like this to be successful. I want my kiddos to be well-read and well-informed.
