My 9th grade students attend a large, comprehensive, and diverse high school in an urban environment. They are excited about high school, but often get overwhelmed by the challenges of life and the harsh circumstances of our city. Yet, they embody the spirit of perseverance, much like the underdog in any game. They come from a diverse range of ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. Their reading skills range from first grade level to at grade level.
