My students live in a tough community. Nine times out of ten when the local news reports a youth shooting/death it is from the area where my school is located. Many of these are gang related. Several students are being raised by grandparents or in foster homes because their parents are in jail/prison, on drugs, or have just disappeared. Many of my students have developed coping systems that involve giving up and accepting failure if the schoolwork looks to hard.
