Our school is a Title 1 school with about 97% of the students receiving free and reduced lunch. The economic in our community hinders parent involvement. Unfortunately, single family homes and job loss are widespread. My students have experienced the impact of the economy because they do not have access to resources and technology that is quickly becoming an expectation in the academic setting. There are eighteen students (6 boys, 12 girls) in my classroom, 84% are African American and 16% are Caucasian. Eight students are performing below grade level in reading but they have an eagerness to learn. They are beautiful students, with the desire to succeed. I am teaching them that their circumstances do not define who they are or what they can achieve. The students are learning to dream big and to let their dreams have dreams.
