My students live in a sparsely populated but close-knit community in the South. They are a diverse group but do not have any issues with openly discussing their similarities and differences. We are the 4th poorest county in our State, and most families cannot afford to buy books for classes. The more popular activities outside of school are marching band, hunting, and riding dirt bikes or four-wheelers. Our school is relatively new and has about 200 students. Because of our size and relatively young age, we do not have many books for our students to choose from for independent reading. Our learning culture is strong, but hindered at times by this lack of resources.
