I know that flexible seating is all the rage right now! I also know that I have always provided some basic choices in seating (a beanbag, a carpet, under a table, in a corner, with stuffed animals) during independent work time and boy did I see an improvement in their ability to sustain their focus during this time of the day. I can't wait to see what having a choice in seating options during the rest of their day will do for them. Having options is so much more than just flexibility. It allows them to be responsible for their choices, to see how their choices affect their work, and to modify those choices as necessary. Something as simple as deciding where to sit ties into character education, school rules (Do Your Personal Best, Be Responsible, Act in a Safe and Healthy Way) and mindfulness. It is an opportunity for me to have discussions about their learning styles and choices that will hopefully inform the rest of their academic career. Options such as floor cushions, stools, yoga ball chairs and inflatable seats allow students to sit at regular desks, at tables lowered to the floor, or to even stand while working. It also allows for those students who need movement to MOVE, and those who need to stand to STAND.
