I teach middle school English in a mostly rural county in Southside Virginia. Economic hardship is rampant and a reality for many of my students. Our county has gained notoriety for having the highest unemployment rate in Virginia on and off for the past several years. The city located at the county center has had one of the highest unemployment rates on the east coast of the United States. Our school system has suffered as the local tax revenue has dried up. Our students have suffered as their parents' ability to provide for them has faltered. We have a high percent of students who receive special services, both financial and educational. Donorschoose has provided my students with resources like novel sets and technology that have enabled them to explore and expand in ways that would not have been possible otherwise. I will continue to turn to Donorschoose for the assistance my students so badly need.
