Located in a growing city with a population of approximately 66,881 people, my school is found in a rural area on the outskirts of town. It is one of 17 elementary schools in the district. My school has a population of a little more than 550 students in grades K-5. While cultural opportunities abound in our area of the state, many children lack the resources to experience and interact with their environment. Many come from rural areas and have never experienced the world outside their part of the area. Students who receive free or reduced lunch at school account for around 45% of the school population. I teach in a self-contained first-grade classroom. I have around 22 students in my class. There are three other first-grade classes at my school. The students in my classroom have varied ability levels and represent a variety of backgrounds and cultural experiences.
