The school I teach for is a middle school (grades 6-8) located in the inner city. About 98% of the student population come from low socioeconomic homes. They also come with limited English speaking skills. Because of low standardized test scores in math and language arts, all elective classes have been removed from the curriculum. In the place of electives, students have been given multiple language arts/reading classes, as well as math classes, in hopes of bringing up their test scores. The brightest part of each students' day is science class. They come in all energized in anticipation of doing some type of lab activity. These students learn best when they see that the instruction will enable them to do lab activities. Consequently, I am always looking for standards based labs to enrich their learning experience.
