They are Haitian. They are Spanish. They are young and excited. My students come from often difficult circumstances. Their parents are in survival mode. They are trying to do their very best, often they themselves have not had the educational opportunities they want so badly for their children. My school, which is outside of New York City, has a poverty rate of over 70% as determined by the number of students receiving free/reduced lunch. These kids have heart. They often are reading below grade level and for many, this is compounded by the fact that English is a second language or not the dominant language spoken in the home. Our school is for grades 1-5. We are very child centered and try to educate the whole child. We are very aware of the academic and societal challenges facing our students. We strive to meet their needs. We simply want the best outcome for all of our students.
