My students come from an urban, low socioeconomic status. The school I teach at is 90% free and reduced lunch and 90% minority. The students I work with often times don't have a thirst for knowledge and reading because they are too pre-occupied with taking care of younger siblings while their parents work in order to provide the basics. The reality of the situation is in most cases a book is not a basic need, when you need food! It is my job as their teacher to close the gap, to show my students that there is a bigger better world out there than where they come from. Reading unlocks doors and opens imaginations. I want my students to be able to dream big!!!
