Percussion instruments provide a unique opportunity for children due to their small size and ease of learning (both kids and drums!). Cajon [cah-hon] drums (or Cajones) originated in Peru, and are played by slapping the box shaped faces with hands, fingers, or mallets. You’ve probably heard cajones in Afro-Peruvian and flamenco music! Making music together is the best form of teamwork, and for a lot of my students, their favorite subject in school. Learning songs and working on rhythm also helps to develop reading, math, recall, and problem solving skills! The physical aspect of drumming will help my kids with emotion regulation and the need for physically engaged learning. And most importantly, the sheer joy of playing music at this age can foster a life-long appreciation of the arts. We will work on developing rhythm via diverse traditions, and get our music on with the beat of our hearts!
