I teach at a Title-One Intermediate School, with over 75% of the students receiving free or reduced lunch and breakfast each day. Most of the students I serve are bilingual, and will be the first generation in their families to attend college. They are enthusiastic and responsible young people with a zest for life. I have 184 eighth grade students that enter my classroom each day. Each one of them brings his/her own interests, needs, and abilities. Their reading levels range from third to twelfth grade. I teach one special literacy class each day for students that are far below grade level in reading. This class also serves students that are English Language Learners who have not been able to acquire the language sufficiently. I also teach a class of Advanced Students, which includes GATE students as well. Many of these kids read faster than I do, which means I have a hard time keeping up with their desire to read something new.
