My students are bright, eager children who LOVE to read. The looks on their faces are priceless when I say, "Go ahead, pick a book to take back to your desk" when we break up into our reading groups. I have been noticing that many of them reach for books they are interested in, but are unable to read those books without assistance. They would much rather read the books that they hear during our read aloud. Our school is a turn-around school, and was one of the lowest performing schools in the city less than three years ago. Within the past three years, the amount of progress we have made has been incredible, and these students come to school everyday wanting to learn. My students face challenges that some of us could never imagine, and struggle to read at a first grade level. To them, having a book read aloud is a huge deal!
