I teach first graders in an area where English is their second language. Many of my students do not have an English language rich environment when they leave school. Many of my students have few books at home. I allow them to check out classroom library books to share with their brothers and sisters. I provide my students opportunities to read a variety of books that students enjoy reading. Children love to read when they are offered a variety of children's literature. Reading will only build confidence and improve comprehension as well as fluency.
