In order to understand Reading Recovery and the careful ways in which teachers scaffold first grade students throughout the program, it is important to have a clear picture of the theoretical framework under which all trained Reading Recovery teachers operate. Trained teachers see reading as a message getting process and writing as a message sending process. These processes are complex, not easily observed, and differ from child to child. Because the literacy process is different for each child and each child brings a unique set of background knowledge and skills to the literacy task, teaching struggling readers can be an arduous task that requires a highly skilled, thoroughly trained teacher. The purpose of the RR program is to scaffold an individual’s reading process and to teach low progress readers how to effectively use various sources of information to gain meaning from the text. Reading Recovery is a daily 30-minute 1:1 program designed to accelerate first grade students to the average reading level of their classroom in 12-20 weeks. On average, a Reading Recovery teacher serves 10-12 students during the year while also serving as a professional development leader for the school as well as a reading support teacher for the classroom teacher. Ongoing professional development that integrates both theory and practice is the key to success for the Reading Recovery program. Attending regional and national conferences is a wonderful way for Reading Recovery teachers to develop their skills, network with other teachers, and discover new strategies to use with students.
