Many of the students in our Title 1 school are part of the military community. Their nationalities and histories are all different, but they have more in common than what shows on the outside. Many of them have moved several times in their lives. Many of them have felt the pain of having a loved one deployed. More than most children, they understand that the freedom we celebrate as Americans comes at a cost. When my students and I started the year last August, many of them hated read aloud time. They would hang back, grumbling and complaining about having to read a book. Throughout the year we have used books from all genres to help us learn. We go to books daily to help us learn. I wanted my students to love learning and to love books. Now, students dive into books, searching for information. They share exciting moments in the books they are reading. When we gather on the carpet for read aloud, all eyes are on their books; all minds have entered another world.
