With our growing number of newcomer students, we do not have enough low-level books in the classroom. It is extremely discouraging for one to pick up a book that they cannot understand. We also do not have technology in the classroom for students to be able to access electronic books. By having books available to them at their own reading level, they will be more encouraged to read and grow their language. They will finally be able to physically interact with real books! Your support will help our newcomer students finally be excited to read in English! The books will be in our newcomer classroom library, organized in baskets with the appropriate reading levels. We will have dedicated time for reading, where our students can browse through the library and choose different books to explore. Students will grow their reading and decoding skills; in turn, they will also grow their writing, speaking and listening skills as they learn and practice vocabulary and sentence structure through books they can understand. In addition, a visual dictionary will be added to our classroom library. Some of our students are not literate in their own home language, rendering traditional dictionaries useless. A visual dictionary helps any students, regardless of language spoken, to be able to translate words. Pencils, colored pencils and glue sticks are used by our students to interact with the work. They practice writing a lot and use colors to do different activities with vocabulary and sentences. Glue sticks are used to paste handy reference sheets into their notebooks so they can easily find reference materials.
