I support a diverse group of low-income students that consider school to be the safest place that they can be. They go home to instability and hardship. My students are from all racial backgrounds, but mostly Hispanic. At school, they are offered two meals, play-time, and shelter. I guarantee my students love, protection, an ear to listen, and a shoulder to cry on. Reading comprehension is something that my students really struggle with. My students can read the text but most cannot explain what they have read. To comprehend means to understand. If students cannot understand what they read, they become frustrated and are no longer motivated to read. By choosing interesting books, students are more prone to diving deeply into the books while searching for understanding.
