My students are an eclectic mix. In my classroom, my students run the gamut, from children who don't have a bed to sleep in at night, to children who come from very affluent backgrounds. While some are fortunate enough to have someone at home to read to them, the majority are not. Many of my students come with no prior knowledge in language arts. They are learning their letters and sounds from the very beginning and are often hearing common childhood stories for the first time. The one thing thing that I have learned about all of my students, regardless of socioeconomic status, culture, race or sex, is that they all love a good story. Even more so, they glow when they can feel a sense of pride and accomplishment of reading one of those good stories on their own.
