My students attend one of the last existing large high schools. My classes have a total enrollment of thirty-five students in a school of approximately four thousand students. They are sophomores in my three self-contained English Special Education classes. We are part of the small learning community of Visual and Performing Arts. The teens are curious, fun, and independent thinkers. They have wonderful minds but reading and writing are a challenge for them. One of the many drawbacks from being labeled learning disabled is that they feel inferior to other kids their age. They look, talk, and wear the low-riding pants like everyone else but it is hard to break the stigma when all they want to do is fit in with kids their age. One of my ultimate goals is to prepare them to transition into general education classes. Not all will make the transition and it is my responsibility to ensure they learn the strategies and skills to successfully enter the community after they graduate in 2012.
