My students are not unlike any other group of kids. As 9-10 year olds, their minds are like sponges...soaking up every new thing that they learn on a daily basis. All kids today need more and more engaging lessons to keep their minds excited and focused on what we are teaching. With the competition of tv, videos, the Internet, and video games, teachers have a harder job year after year of keeping our kids' excited about school. I look for ways to make my classroom somewhere that my students WANT to come each day and WANT to listen to what I want to teach them. My classroom is a little unique because my students have an above-average ability to learn. This can make my job challenging because I need to find things that go beyond the provided curriculum. I plan lessons using the Florida Standards, but try to pull in materials that will be more exciting than provided materials.
