I am the Head Literacy Curriculum Developer at a charter school in a Dominican neighborhood in New York City. The school has many students who recently arrived to the United States and many more who are first generation Americans. The students are truly phenomenal and work so hard inside of school and after school to get the education that is so important to them and their families. Our students come in several years below grade level on average in reading but make truly dramatic gains to end the year on level and head straight on with an eye toward college without looking back.
