My students are part of a large urban elementary school. Many diverse cultures are represented in our school. English is not the first language for over 80% of our students which makes the graphics and other visual aides of magazines even more important as they learn to read. Over 75% of our school qualifies from free and reduced lunch. My students come to school eager to learn even though many face challenges at home. Many of my families have limited or no access to reading materials at home. Families want to help their children succeed, but are sometimes unsure of how to help their children learn to read. Magazine subscriptions will provide my students with a steady and ongoing source of new and exciting text that is accessible and engaging.
