I teach math to about 75 fifth graders. I teach in a school that has a diverse population of learners. Among my 75 math students I have about 30 students that are either labeled Academically and Intellectually Gifted, or are that are above average. This year, due to budget cuts, our county closed the gifted center that served the gifted students of our county. With this closure, it has become quite a challenge to find resources and materials to challenge these students. This resource is aimed at grades 6-9 and would help provide a challenging mix of math concepts embedded in real life magazine articles. An additional benefit of this magazine is that it will incorporate nonfiction reading material with the math concepts. Our recent testing data has indicated that our gifted students have not been performing up to their potential with nonfiction reading. This would be a way that I can support the reading teacher on my team.
