Our school is located in a very high poverty area. The majority of my students come from low income families and don't have adequate enough reading materials at home. Most of their learning happens in the few hours that they are with me. My assistant and I try hard to pack as much learning as we can in those few hours. Since phonemic awareness is a great predictor of early reading success, it is necessary for them to hear words that rhymes. The Dr. Seuss books are great for this. The students love the funny tales of The Cat in the Hat and Hop on Pop. Activities can be designed around these books that will give students a greater advantage with this skill.
