This project will fund 5 Parrot Mambo drones with an extra battery and charger. The drones will be flown by high school students for hands on activities in Geometry, STEM I and II, Forestry, Carpentry, Landscaping, Art, Video Production, Yearbook and Conservation and Wildlife classes. Drones will provide current technology to our rural district that strives to provide students and staff, with teaching and learning tools that motivate students to grow and explore their world. Fun and coolness aside, drones are a great tool for students to experience the world around them. A student’s vision of the world opens up as they control and fly a drone. Students will fly over carpentry projects to view their progress, planted fields to study their nutrient needs and insect issues and unplanted areas to scope out their proposed landscaping projects. With the videos that are taken students will edit the footage in video production class for a spot on the school website. Math students will fly drones and record time and speed data to produce linear regression equations. In addition, STEM students will have the opportunity to experience the pros and cons of drones including, crashes and fixing drones, policies, security and privacy issues. All of these experiences and projects are valuable in their own right but they also bring the “when are we ever going to use this” answer to the classroom. The hands-on experience of flying drones and using them in real-life situations provide students with career skills and training. The hands-on experience also gives students power over their own learning and a say in the outcome. Drones are here to stay and we owe it to our students to give them the vision and hands-on training that flying drones provides.
