While reading plays, my students get up from their desks to act. They try on lines with different voices, finding the tone that matches the emotional resonance of the line and the character. Students go through the process of staging and costuming, considering diverse elements of their textual understanding. They consider color theory and the universality of themes. They also weigh the similarities and differences between cultures--French, Norwegian, American. I've found these texts to provide the right level of rigor to be challenging without creating insurmountable frustration for developing readers. Most importantly, students can see themselves in these texts. They invest in the characters, and they talk about the themes well after we finish reading.
