Most people have a misconception of people who live in Hawaii. I am sorry to say, but we also have our share of students dealing with poverty, broken families, incarcerated parents, substance-abuse, crime-ridden neighborhoods, teenage pregnancy, domestic violence, high unemployment, etc. Sadly, these are all challenges that face many if not most of my students on a daily basis. Due to the community's remoteness from the nearest urban center, there are few resources available to them and many of them grow up never getting a chance to experience anything outside of their dysfunctional environment. For most, the school is quite literally a place to escape their problems--if not for a lifetime by making good choices and reaping the academic rewards--at least for a day or even a period where they may be transported to a world of shocking ideas, or treated to a warm meal, or encouraged to make a human connection with an adult who cares about them.
