My class includes 12 special needs students (verbal and non-verbal) with a wide range of abilities including autism. We have 3 girls and 9 boys and they all love to work and play outside in our garden and on our playground. During our day we have 17 student assistants who rotate through our class during their exploratory class periods. These awesome students are mentors to my class and love to work with them in all areas of learning - but the garden is a favorite part of our functional curriculum. We are a Title I school and there are 5 adults in my room including lead teacher, 2 paraprofessionals and 2 individual shadows/one-on-ones. Each of my students is assigned a weekly helper job including gardening and PE/playground clean-up. We also plant and care for the large flower pots at the front entrance to the school and our side entrance.
