I work in a Title I public elementary school in Florida, which means the vast majority of the students in my class and at our school live below the poverty level. Funding for supplies and materials has been drastically cut each of the past three years, and many long-standing businesses in the community have been shut down or relocated elsewhere within the state, also victim to the current economic slump. Many parents simply do not have the means in our community to purchase "extras" for our students like reading books.
