My students attend a Title I school wherein 66% of all students receive free and/or reduced lunch and breakfast. My students are 72% African American, 14% White, non-Hispanic, 13% Hispanic, and less than 1% Asian. Many of my students have families who have never been able to afford to purchase art supplies. I teach many students who are still new to holding paintbrushes and even scissors. - My students need and want to experience advanced artistic mediums but have had very few chances to so. - My students are most excited about and identify most with learning about artists who look like them and who have undergone similar hardships.
