Language-based learning disabilities are problems with age-appropriate reading, spelling, and/or writing. This disorder is not about how smart a person is. Most people diagnosed with learning disabilities have average to superior intelligence. Intervention with spoken language (speaking and listening) can also be designed to support the development of written language. For example, after listening to a story book, the student may be asked to state and write answers to questions. He/she may be asked to give a verbal and then a written summary of the story. Given that many of our students live in poverty, improving literacy is not always a priority for them or their families. Giving them access to both speech-language therapy while improving literacy at the same time will help target this issue. The more help they have in this area, the better. If I can assist the classroom teacher with targeting literacy during speech-language therapy, then I will!
