The 50 students in my audience are preschool children from my community, many of who will eventually be students in my 5th grade class. My 20 years of teaching experience backs all of the research that shows that children who have books in the home are more successful in school, and that a love of reading starts with loving adults reading aloud to children. Through the "Bookcase for Every Child" project, these preschool children will each get a bookshelf, made and donated by volunteers in our community, to have in their home. I plan to read the book The Piggy in the Puddle by Charlotte Pomerantz out loud to the audience at the bookshelf ceremony, and I hope to give each child their own copy of the book to put on their new bookshelf at the conclusion of the ceremony.
