Learning the importance of soil to our food supply is critical to understanding how we nourish our bodies. Students see how seeds they plant in the holes they dig grow into the vegetables they put on their plates. With gloves, students are free to dig down in the forest floor and pull out a juicy, long brown earthworm. The looks on their faces as they show off their finds is amazing. Food chains start with small insects and creatures that crawl around under the leaf litter. Learning becomes real and memorable when they move out of the classroom and into the real world around them.
